COVID-19 Update from Volcano Scouting

Updated: May 11, 2020

Volcano Scouting has been closely monitoring the public health conditions in Washington state and is saddened to announce alterations must be made to our Summer 2020 programming in order to ensure the health and safety of our staff and participants.

The 2020 Merit Badge Weekend (scheduled for June 5-7 at the Mount St. Helens Science and Learning Center) has been canceled. All participants will receive an automatic full refund of $30.00/person credited to their debit/credit card within the next few weeks.

The 2020 Hornaday Adventure Camp (scheduled for August 7-9 at the Mount St. Helens Science and Learning Center) is tentatively moving forward with a reduced participant capacity of 50 people, enforced social distancing, and increased facility sanitation. We are also reducing the participant fee for this event to $30.00/person. Participants will receive an automatic partial refund of $20.00/person credited to their debit/credit card within the next few weeks. Participants can also elect to cancel their registration and receive a full refund by emailing volcanoscouting@gmail.com should they feel uncomfortable attending the event.

The 2020 Virtual Summer Experience (NEW!) will occur from June 1 to August 31 through Instructure's Canvas online course software. For one all-inclusive fee of $20.00/scout (parents/legal guardians/adult leaders do not register or pay), participants will receive access to a maximum of 14 merit badges, various training opportunities, and special Mount St. Helens programming. Scouts will also receive a special gift from Volcano Scouting mailed directly to their house! Registration opens Monday, May 11 at https://endurancecui.active.com/event-reg/select-race?e=69284953. More information can be found at www.volcanoscouting.org/virtual

These are challenging times for everyone and we recognize the potential financial burden COVID-19 may be placing on our participants. This is why we have decided to offer automatic full refunds to our 2020 Merit Badge Weekend participants and a fee reduction (with automatic partial refunds) to our 2020 Hornaday Adventure Camp participants.

We also recognize that our fiscal sponsor, the Mount St. Helens Institute, is sustaining significant financial losses this year due to COVID-19 closures. This is why we are asking all our participants to consider making a one-time, tax-deductible donation to the Institute from their refunded participant fees. You can do so at www.mshinstitute.org/give/

We thank everyone for your patience and understanding as our team of volunteer staff work to mitigate the negative impacts of COVID-19. We look forward to offering alternative virtual programming and a safe Hornaday Adventure Camp this summer. Our website is now updated to reflect this new information. Should you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to contact us at volcanoscouting@gmail.com
