Volcano Scouting Weighing Summer 2021 Options

As the coronavirus pandemic continues to pose significant health and safety concerns in Washington state, Volcano Scouting and the Mount St. Helens Institute are weighing our options for in-person programming at the Mount St. Helens Science and Learning Center this Summer 2021. At this time, we have no new details regarding our fifth annual Merit Badge Weekend and third annual Hornaday Adventure Camp which are tentatively scheduled for June 4-6 and August 13-15 respectfully. Our team is cautiously optimistic that we will be able to host some variation of an in-person event this year, with sophisticated health and safety measures, at Mount St. Helens, however, we will not be able to provide details or open registration until at least April 2021. We understand this is difficult for Scouting families to plan around and prepare for and extend our most sincere apologies.

We are, however, going to launch a new virtual merit badge program in late June through Instructure's Canvas online learning management system. The "Virtual Volcanic Voyage" (V³ for short) will last approximately one month and allow scouts to complete several environmental merit badges through interactive online activities. For those who participated in our 2020 Virtual Summer Experience, this new virtual program will look very similar, but we have made significant improvements thanks to feedback from participants. This year, scouts will be able to choose which merit badges to attempt, content will be separated by merit badge, the entire event will last just one month, there will be additional interactive activities, and we have improved the user experience within Canvas. Details and registration for this virtual event are likely to be released in late March.

Again, we are patiently waiting for further guidance from the Mount St. Helens Institute, in coordination with the USDA Forest Service and State of Washington, regarding the possibility of in-person events at Mount St. Helens this Summer 2021. Once we have additional information, we will be sure to share it with everyone. Thank you for your patience and we look forward to engaging with scouts again soon!
