MERIT BADGE WEEKEND
Volcano Scouting's fourth annual Merit Badge Weekend will occur at the Mount St. Helens Science and Learning Center on June 5-7, 2020. This late-Spring event will offer a variety of classroom and outdoor learning activities, including presentations from outdoor professionals, service projects, science experiments, field studies, nature walks, and more, that align directly to two natural resources-themed merit badges. Participants will also have the opportunity to engage in campfire programs, star gazing, board games, movie presentations, a polar bear swim, and chapel service.

Volcano Scouting events are restricted to a maximum of 100 participants (scouts and adult leaders combined). We do not accommodate "lone scouts"; all youth participants must be accompanied by appropriate adult leadership in accordance with BSA Youth Protection guidelines. *We design our programs to cover specific merit badge requirements; either for complete or partial completion of the merit badge(s). Scouts are provided an articulated workbook to complete as they attend and participate in the scheduled programming. At the end of the event, scouts omit this completed workbook to our registered merit badge counselors on-site for evaluation. While we do not guarantee any scout the completion and approval of merit badge(s) covered in our program, our merit badge counselors will award any requirements completed in the workbook for partial completion. Furthermore, our merit badge counselors make it an effort to work with individual scouts to complete or clarify their workbook in order to fulfill the merit badge requirements for completion. We do not conduct regular individual interviews or tests in order to award completed merit badges; scouts must use the provided workbook in order to qualify for the merit badges covered in our program.
VENUE DESCRIPTION
The Mount St. Helens Science and Learning Center is a 12,000 square-foot retired visitor center located in the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. The building and surrounding area is owned and managed by the USDA Forest Service. The Mount St. Helens Institute offers educational programs, community events, and overnight reservations through a special use permit with the Forest Service. The building includes two bathrooms with flush toilets and potable water, a full-service kitchen, dining hall, two indoor sleeping areas, a movie theater, and two interpretive rooms. Although there is no cell phone service or internet available within the Monument, there is an emergency telephone located inside the Science and Learning Center.
Located just minutes from the Science and Learning Center, a large primitive campsite offers approximately 35 bare-ground tent pads, several picnic tables, and a large vault toilet. A spectacular view of Mount St. Helens can be seen from every tent pad. There is no potable water or trash receptacles in the campsite. Campfires and dutch oven cooking is prohibited in the campsite.
